A popular actor and talented director, Chaplin developed his bowler-hatted tramp character to widespread acclaim.

He has been portrayed many times by Tussaud's. The current figure was lent to the National Portrait Gallery in 1985 for an exhibtion on his life.

Chaplin was knighted in 1975 shortly before his death in 1977.
