William Britains |
The typical field ration of the Union soldier consisted of salt pork (better known as "sowbelly"), hard bread ("hardtack"), and a dried vegetable, such as rice, but more commonly, beans. When soldiers were not free to forage from the countryside, they purchased additional food. Next to food, nothing raised the soldiers’ spirits more than mail from home.
