Surveys showed that many fleet buyers wanted the extra anti-theft security of a lockable boot and Ford was losing out in this market, as its radical-looking Sierra was initially only available as a hatchback. With a major facelift of the Sierra planned for 1987, nearly five years into its life, Ford spent £228 million developing a boot and a more conservative frontal style.
