On 1st April 1933 the towns of Burnley, Colne and Nelson amalgamated their tram and bus services. The tram services were replaced wholly by buses by 1935 and the last of these buses, Leyland TD4s, were replaced in 1959 by two Leyland PD3/6 buses Nos. 232/3. These massive 73 seat buses, nicknamed ‘Big Berthas’ by staff, were the first front entrance double deckers. They were used initially on the X38 Limited Stop between Burnley and Colne. A further four examples, 234/7, were purchased in 1961. When withdrawn in 1974 the six buses were purchased by Lancaster City Council for many years of further use.
