First held in 1911, the Monte Carlo Rally was seen as a “ Grande Tourismo Challenge”, an event so arduous on both cars & crew that very soon teams from all four corners of Europe would enter for the sheer thrill of participation. With only the interruption of the cannons from both World Wars, the event has gone from strength to strength and entry is now seen as the pinnacle of the World Rally Calendar. Although the famous BMC “Works” Mini Coopers notched up numerous outright victories, private entries have also proved what a competitive car the Mini Cooper was, often beating far more powerful machinery by virtue of the Mini’s handling and performance. Both cars featured here, EYH 846C & L408 AUE, have been successfully campaigned by privateers for many years. EYH 846C: Built in 1965, this MK 1 Austin Cooper 998 was originally used for circuit racing but fell into disrepair and was stored in a barn for over ten years. Rediscovered in ’96, EYH was transformed by its current owners, Robert Stacey & Nicky West, for entry into Historic Rallying. It’s first international event was as far a field as Morocco in the 1998 Classic Marathon, and EYH has since competed in such events as the 4th, 5th & 8th Monte Carlo Historique and the 2003 & 2004 Classic Acropolis rallies. L408 AUE: Purchased by Mini Spares in November 2003, this Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i was only intended as the “back up” car for Timo Makinen’s entry in the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally. However as the £40,000 car was stolen from it’s trailer the team took just 2 days to turn AUE from it’s original factory condition into full rally spec, and Makinen/Easter were once again able to compete. AUE has subsequently rallied in both the 1995 Network Q Rally & again in the 1996 Monte Carlo, this time championed by Keith Bird & Robert Dyson.
