The founder of the Company, Thomas Armstrong, was a joiner, cabinetmaker and wheelwright who set up business on his own account in the Cumbria town of Cockermouth in 1830. In 1964, Thomas Armstrong Ltd evolved into a Holding Company and four subsidiary Companies; Contracting, Timber Products Manufacture, Concrete Block Manufacture and in 1976 a Transport Services Company was formed bringing together the quarrying, haulage and vehicle maintenance activities. The late 80s saw the move to Flimby, Workington and since that time regional offices have been established in Lancaster and Catterick. A number of acquisitions have since enabled the group to extend its geographical operations, which now extend from Glasgow to Congleton and from Newcastle to Liverpool.
