Organised on February 1, 1963 at Kincheloe AFB, Michigan where it replaced the 4239th Strategic Wing. The 449th supported SAC combat operations in southeast Asia with KC-135 tanker aircraft and crews from November 1965 to December 1975 and B-52 crews from May 1968 to June 1965. Responsible for phasing down Kincheloe AFB for closure, July to September 1977. 60-0049 was built by Boeing at Wichita, Kansas, and delivered to the USAF in 1960. It was one of three B-52s that visited the UK in March 1967 and participated in the SAC Bombing Competition at RAF Marham, Norfolk.
