British Caledonian was an airline formed from the merger in 1970 of British United Airways and Caledonian Airways. It was formed to compete on international routes against the state monopoly carriers BEA and BOAC. The airline's base was Gatwick Airport, and as an inheritance of the Caledonian Airways roots, there was also an extensive hub operated from Prestwick Airport. BCAL was finally reduced to a charter subsidiary, Caledonian Airlines with became absorbed by British Airways. British Caledonian operated a total of 20 Boeing 707s including appropriately-registered Series 338C, G-BCAL (c/n 19297) which was bought from the Australian carrier, QANTAS in May 1975. It was named "County of Renfrew", then "Flagship Bonnie Scotland" and finally "Lock Invar" until being withdrawn from service in September 1979.
