The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers bought their first steam lorry in 1916, an Atkinson 6-tonner. This model of Atkinson was to be bought in great numbers until 1928 when the Preston-based Company ceased building steam propelled vehicles. CMC then started to buy the Sentinel Super Steamer model and later the Sentinel DG. During the war, the Sentinels were piped to run on producer gas to save fuel and although the famous Foden DG range came into use in 1938, the Sentinels were not pensioned off until the early 50s.
