The fall in demand caused by the worldwide depression of the 1920's prompted the formation in 1931 of Shell-Mex and BP Limited. This improved the economy of distribution and production of Shell-Mex Limited (the distribution organisation of Shell and Eagle Groups in the UK) and BP. It was a "temporary" association that was to last for almost half a century. A long period of post-war expansion with increasing consumption fuelled by a growth in demand for oil products, mostly for transport, was followed by the turbulent 70s, a decade which saw the dominance of OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries), rising oil prices and uncertainty over supply, coupled with reductions in energy use. In 1976 a massive programme of operational and adminstrative activity was implimented to split the Shell-Mex and BP Group and spearate the two brands Shell and BP - described as the biggest industrial de-merger in history. As separate brands, Shell and BP have continued to be at the forefront of oil marketing, each with their own fleet of distinctive vehicles. This vehicle was a mainstay of the fleet in the 1950s and 1960s and mainly carried fuel oils for industrial customers with a load of 3500 gallons.
