Corgi Classics - Original Omnibus Company |
In the late 70s, the changeover to the new generation of rear-engined double deckers in Hong Kong was not very successful because of the hilly routes and the hot and humid climate. Both franchised bus companies tried to source a purpose-built front-engined bus for the region. The Jubilant was introduced by Dennis with a front mounted Gardner 6LXB engine and Voith D851 gearbox with inegral hydraulic retarder, similar to the drive-train of Leyland Victory II, except that Jubilants have Eton hub-reduction rear-axle. There were 30 Jubilants in the CMB fleet, licensed from February 1980 to May 1980 and all had Alexander CB type H60/42D CKD bodies. It should be noted that the seating capcity was set at 102 by the companies in the design stage to be the same as the LF class Daimler Fleetlines for standardization. The bodies for both classes are almost identical except DSs have a lower driving position. The number of standees allowed on DSs was 18, 2 more than the LVs at 16, but this was later reduced to 8 for DSs. The original body of DS6 was destroyed by fire and then replaced by a similar LV body. It also carried an all over driver recruitment livery of CMB showing a telephone hotline for application enquiries.
