During the 1930s, Belfast Corporation began replacing its trams with electric trolleybuses and seven three axle vehicles, all bodied by Harkness entered service on the 28th May 1938. Following the successful operation, an order was placed for ACE 3 axle trolleybus chassis, the last of which did not arrive until 1943. Belfast was the only trolleybus system in Ireland and at one time operated a total of 245, making it one of the largest fleets in the UK.
