Corgi Classics - Original Omnibus Company |
Late in 1965 the then BEA was courting the business passenger and introducing a number of services such as a direct "EXECUTIVE EXPRESS" coach service from Heathrow airside to the centre of London. This was to counteract the growing competition from imprvoed services brought about by electrification of the North West and Scottish rail links. At first, pending the delivery of purpose built vehicles, elderly RF type coaches were used but the EC class arrived in 1966 and provided a new standard of comfort. They also included radio telephone links for the business traveller and the amber beacon on the roof allowed them access to the aircraft apron, thus saving valuable time on the journey to the capital. Today such a service would be impossible due to the security regulations enfornced at all airports but in the '60s such measures were still to come and air travel as we know it today was in its infancy.
