British Sugar Corporation was founded in 1936 following the amalgamation of 13 autonomous companies set up during the early 1900's. The government shareholding was sold in 1981 and the word 'corporation' was dropped in 1982. In 1982 the company was acquired by Berisford International and was subsequently purchased by current owners Associated British Foods in January 1991.

British Sugar today provides more than half of the UK's sugar requirements of which over 500,000 tonnes is deliveried in road tankers operated by British Sugar in liveried vehicles. The current fleet of 75 vehicles operated on Bulk Sugars is made up of 37 DAF and 38 ERF tractor units.
