XL161 becaome operational in February 1964 with No. 139 Squadron at Wittering. Only 34 were built, 22 being cancelled, the remainder being converted to the strategic reconnaissance role by the mid-1960s, as the SR.Mk.2, exchanging their all-white anti-radiation paint for a low-level camouflage. This versiob served solely with No. 543 Squadron at RAF Wyton, Huntingdon from December 1965 until May 1974. XL161 was one of these machines and started life as a B.Mk.2 bomber in 1962, was then converted to an K.Mk.2 tanker seeing action in the Gulf War.
