Corgi Classics - Aviation Archive |
After WWII, the United States were able to concentrate on developing aviation, including breaking the sound barrier. This was done by test pilot Captain Charles 'Chuck' Yeager in a small rocket-powered aircraft called the Bell X-1, which had to be carried up to a high altitude underneath a Boeing B-29 Superfortress'motherplane'. The first launch of the X-1 from the B-29 took place on 19th January 1946. On 14th October 1947, the Bell X-1 research aircraft became the first in the world to exceed the speed of sound in level flight attaining Mach 1.015 or 1,078km/h (670mph) at 12,800m (42,000ft).
