Currently flying 11 aircraft of 6 different types, the unit was formced at Biggin Hill as the Hastoric Aircraft Flight on 11th July 1957 with just 3 Spitfires and a sole Hurricane. Briefly increasing by 2 MkXVI Spitfire, they moved to North Weald and then onto Martlesham Heath. After a short time at Hrsham St Faith (Norwich Airport) a further move was made to Coltishall in 1963 where they remained for 13 years. In 1973 the Lancaster arrived and the unit was renamed The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The final move was made in 1976, to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and has remained there for the last 24 years. In that time the number of aircraft has varied and it currently stands at 5 Spitfires, 2 Hurricanes, a Lancaster, Dakota and the last operational Chipmunks in the RAF.
