The fighter arms of the four luftflotten engaded on the the Eastern Front during Germany's assualt on Russia comprised JG3 with Bf109F's under Major Gunther Lutzow, II and II/JG 27 commanded by Major Wolfgang Schellmann with Bf109E's JG51 under Werner Molders with Bf109F's and II and II/JG 52 commanded by Major Hans Trubenbach with Bf109E's. In addition there was JG53, JG54 and JG77 and such was the degree of surprise and the superiority of the German aircraft that on the first day alone 1811 Russian aircraft were destroyed. Depicted here is a Bf109E-4/B of Gruppenstab III/SKG 210 or Wespen-Geschwader (Wasp Squadron) as it was known, which served on the Eastern front central sector in Autumn of 1941.
