One of the most famous Luftwaffe pilots of the Second World War, Oblt. Franz von Werra's legendary status is due to the fact that he was the only German pilot to escape from allied captivity in Canada. Crash landing his Messerschmitt Bf109E on 5th September 1940 near Marden, Kent on his 10th mission over England, he made three unsuccessful attempts at escape in England before being sent to Canada where he succeeded and was deported by to Germany.
