On 1st August 1940, No. 261 Squadron, RAF, formed the Malta Fighter Flight with Gladiators and Hurricanes to defend Malta during the Second World War, until May 1941 when it disbanded. On 12th July 1941, No.127 Squadron at Habaniya was renumbered 261 Squadron and in August took part in the occupation of Iran. It remained on defence duites in Palestine and Cyprus until early 1942, when it left to reinfornce the air forces in the Far East. In January 1943, the squadron moved to Burma and then was temporarily disbanded the following year, before changing their Hurricanes for Thunderbolts.
