P3854 was initially with 7 OUT and served with Nos 85 and 257 Squadrons before transfer to 56 OUT and being struck off charge on 2nd Augst 1941. The aircraft depicted was flown by Squadron Leader Peter Townsend of No.85 Squadron based at Church Fenton from September 1940. It carried the code VY-Q and waers the squadrons hexagon badge below the cockpit, the marking having been ousted from its original position on the fin by an RAF flash.
