Corgi Classics - Aviation Archive |
P2798 was issued to No20 on 5th April 1940 for final airframe outfitting and flight testing, before being sent to No87 Sqn at Lille/Seclin in mid-May as attrition replacement. Its arrival in France coincided with the posting of experienced pre-war pilot Flt Lt 'Widge' Gleed to the embattled unit. Gleed made an immediate impression with P2798 which was decorated with Disney's 'Figaro' on its starboard door and had its prop spinner painted red. Gleed continued to use P2798 throughout the Battle of Britain. Remaining his personal mount after promotion to Squadron Commander, it enjoyed further successes with Gleed until he finally replaced it with a MkII in August 1941.
