Corgi Classics - Aviation Archive |
Possibly the most successful pilot aircraft combination in Fighter Command during the Summer of 1940, Carbury shot down 8 Bf 109E's, with 5 of these kills being scored in 3 patrols on one day (31st August). During the final combat of this day, No603 Squadron tangled with I./JG 3 over the Thames Estuary and after claiming his final 2 kills Carbury was hit by a 20mm round which caused an oxygen bottle to explode, badly damaging the plane. After 10 months of repair, R6835 was reissued to No457 Squadron (RAAF) and after service with various OUT's was passed to the Fleet Air Arm in May 1943.
