One of the most famous of all German Second World War pilots, Adolf Galland began his combat career in the Spanish Civil Conflict, commanding the 3/J88 'Mickey Mouse' Squadron. Promoted to Captain in 1939 and then to Colonel in 1941 he later became General of the Fighter Arm of the Luftwaffe scoring a total of 104 victories during the war. The first encounter with British aircraft occurred when BF 109Es successfully intercepted a formation of Vickers Wellingtons over Heligoland Bight in December 1939.
